ABOUT DARFUR AND EASTERN CHAD

Since 2003, the people of Darfur have been targeted for death and displacement by the Government of Sudan in a campaign that has been labelled a genocide by the U.S. government and as "the worst humanitarian crisis in the world" by the United Nations.

After four years, at least 200,000 Darfurians have been killed and over 2.5 million displaced. Hundreds of thousands have fled into Chad seeking refuge from their attackers.

Despite widespread knowledge and documentation of these atrocities committed by the goverment of Sudan in conjunction with private militias known as the "janjaweed", the international community has overwhelmingly failed to act to quell the violence.   Now, the violence has begun to spill over the border into Chad itself, with nomadic militias now leveraging destruction on Chadian villages in the same deadly patterns as the attacks on Darfuri villages.

In June 2007, we travelled to eastern Chad to meet these people--both the Darfuri and Chadians- who have lost their families, their homes, and their entire way of life due not only to the Sudanese government's actions but also by the international community's failure to act.

We recorded their stories to learn more about their immediate and long-term needs and to better understand how we, individually and corporately, can make a difference in the lives of these people
